About Us
The Foundation
The Foundation is a corporate body established under the Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden Foundation Act 2007 and it operates under the aegis of Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security. The Foundation has the following statutory objects and functions:
- To manage, administer, conserve, maintain and develop the Garden
- To manage, conserve and maintain any historical monument or object, building or structure in the Garden
- To care for, conserve and preserve the flora and fauna in the Garden
- To encourage visits to the Garden by members of the public by promoting the unique value of the Garden and, in so doing, to enable them to acquire greater knowledge about the endemic flora and fauna within the State of Mauritius
- To ensure the protection of the environment and flora and fauna in the Garden
- To control and remove all species which can be harmful to the Garden
- To disseminate knowledge with respect to endemic flora and fauna through publications and other mean
- To procure specimens of endemic flora and fauna for the purposes of the Act
- To obtain scientific data, assemble collections, produce audio and video materials and engage in scientific research on endemic flora and fauna
- To set up, maintain and develop a nursery and such other facilities as it considers appropriate for the multiplication and propagation of endemic flora and fauna
- To establish linkages with similar bodies and with research and extension institutions engaged in matters pertaining to horticulture, biology and related activities
History
- The Foundation was set up under the Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden Foundation Act 2007 which was passed in the National Assembly of the Republic of Mauritius on the 31st July 2007 and published in the Government Gazette as Act No. 19 of 2007. The Act was proclaimed to come into operation on the 4th September 2007under Proclamation No. 17 of 2007.
- The Foundation had started its operation on the 4th September 2007 and the Board of the Foundation was appointed in this month itself. The Board held its first meeting on the 17th October 2007 and during which the priorities for the setting up of the appropriate structures were defined so that the Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden located at Le Val could be opened up to the public.
- On the 23rd September 2008 approval had been obtained for service with the Foundation to be defined as “approved service” for the purpose of the Pensions Act. This approval was gazetted and appeared as General Notice No. 1878 of 2008.
- Setting up of basic amenities to welcome visitors at the restoration/conservation site, Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden started in 2012 and completed in 2013.
- The Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden was officially opened to the general public and tourist on the 11th June 2014

To contribute to biodiversity conservation at global level and knowledge dissemination and research of the endemic flora and fauna of Mauritius
