Overview
The Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden is a wonder world of 275 hectares of sub humid mountain forest nestled in between Mountain Lagrave and Mountain Laselle that form part of the Grand Port Mountain Range. It is a meeting point with nature in its most raw and authentic state.
Visitors will be indulged in an illusionary, heaven world, generated by spectacular viewpoints, lofty spots, picturesque panoramic scenery and patronizing hill tops which sculpt an amazing scenery of pristine emerald green forests, complemented by nature ‘add-ons’ of magnificent crystal clear snaking streams and idyllic waterfalls cascading over rock pinnacles and mountain flanks.
Such a nature adventure, backed up by picnic spots will make you feel as relaxed, peaceful and delighted with your family and dear ones. At the end of this soothing visit, you will acquire an educative experience with a different mindset and knowledge for an efficient protection of the environment. A sense of belonging will be created between man and nature, coupled by a deeper realization of the signified meaning of the endemic biodiversity of Mauritius, as it forms part of our natural heritage, thus, our national identity and hence a part of us.

The Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden Foundation was created in 2007 to safeguard, preserve and rehabilitate the living jewel, Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden.
Today this living jewel of 275 hectares is a sanctuary of biodiversity, guaranteeing the future of its endemic fauna and flora.
The Flora
The Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden forms part of the 2% remnant native and endemic forests that remains in Mauritius. The Garden has a rich biodiversity endemism of flora.
Several critically endangered endemic and indigenous plant species have been discovered at Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden such as the Bois clou (Eugenia bojeri), Vacoas (Pandanus iceryi), Tambalacoque (Sideroxylon grandiflorum), Ebene marbré à grosse feuilles (Diospyros boutoniana) and Bois Perroquet (Olax psittacorum).
The Fauna
Mauritius and its adjacent islets have 52 native species of forest vertebrates and 24 out of them are now extinct.
Rare fauna species such as Mauritius Black Bulbul (Hypsipetes olivaceus), Mauritius Grey White Eye (Zosteropus mauritianus), Grey tomb bat (Taphozous mauritianus) have been inventoried at Vallée d’Osterlog.
On the 29th May 2019, a Pink Pigeon Display Facility was inaugurated at Vallée d’Osterlog Endemic Garden and a pair of Pink Pigeon (Nesoenas mayeri) is living at the heart of the restored forest together with four Aldabra giant tortoises (aldabrachelys gigantea).
The Track
Ramblers get ready for with your camera, walking or sports shoes with socks, sun block, mosquito repellent for an adventuring 1km trek on-foot to experience nature in its authentic state. Trekkers will also have the privilege to admire Eugenia bojeri (Bois clou), Pandanus iceryi (Vacoas), Olax psittacorum (Bois perroquet), Diospyros tessellaria (Bois d’éponge) and several other critically endangered endemic plants along the track with at the apotheosis an idyllic waterfall cascading over rock pinnacles. Towel and spare clothes are recommended in case you get soiled and it is advisable for drinking plenty of water during the trek, keeping mobiles and pagers off when in the forest, no littering and no damaging to animals and plants within the garden. The excursion is not suitable for pregnant women and children under 5 years old.
